What to look for in a Newborn Photographer

Welcoming a new baby into your life is a wonderful and beautiful thing!

They are precious and tiny and to you, the most beautiful thing in the world.

During their first days and weeks, there will be the opportunity to have their tiny little details captured for you to remember.

Choosing a photographer is not easy, there are many things to consider....

The first thing to consider should always be safety!

When looking for a photographer, to capture your new precious baby's first professional photos, think to yourself.....'Will my baby be safe?'

You should be looking for people that fit the following criteria

- Are they immunised?

Newborns are not immunised until they are between 6 and 8 weeks of age. Hiring someone that has been immunised against childhood illnesses, in particular MMRV (measles, mumps, rubella and varicella),whooping cough and polio, is essential. Your newborn baby has no protection against outside sources from these horrible (and preventable) diseases

- Are they cleared to work with children?

Although this is not essential it should still be something to consider when looking for someone to handle and photograph your precious baby.

If asked, the photographer should be able to show you their clearance documentation.

- Are they experienced in handling/posing a newborn baby?

Newborns require support and comfort. They are unable to regulate their own core temperature and lack the muscles and skeletal stability to hold themselves up. Hiring a photographer that has experience handling new babies and that understands the needs of a newborn should be pretty high in your list.

There are so many things that can go very wrong if your baby is not handled with the utmost care and attention. Who ever you choose should have a clear knowledge of new baby's anatomy and how they can and cannot move. You need to know your baby is safe in the hands of this complete stranger. When your session day comes around, make sure you are comfortable with everything on the day. If you are uncomfortable at any time, speak up! Its your baby and you need to know that they are 100% safe.

- Are they insured?

God pray this is never needed but for all involved its imperative for your photographer to have insurance! Its not something anyone wants to think about but if something were to go wrong, at least you know you are covered. Lets face it....accidents happen regardless of how careful we already are.

- Do you like their work?

Although this point doesn't read into the safety aspect, its still very much something to consider. If you don't like the photographer's work, chances are you will waste your money or have regrets that you didn't choose someone else.

Stop by their Facebook page and check out their website. Do you like what you see? Ask lots of questions and don't be afraid to keep looking if they are not the right fit for you and your baby.

A newborn session will only happen once! Its like a wedding day....if you miss the moments, they are gone forever. Newborns change and grow so rapidly within the first few weeks and you need to be confident that the photographer you choose is not going to miss a thing.

So now you have a few things to consider...

Yours sincerely
